Jevec Residence, Orange CA
Overview
The Jevec Residence project in Orange, California focused on opening up the home’s main living area and redesigning the kitchen layout to fit the new plan. The homeowners wanted to remove the walls separating the living room, kitchen, and laundry room to create one connected great room. Anna Dwinger Interiors was brought in to design the kitchen once the open concept layout was confirmed as possible.
Project Goals
- Open up the living room, kitchen, and laundry room into one great room
- Create a kitchen layout that fixed flow and functionality issues
- Design an island that felt generous and practical for daily use
Design and Implementation
Layout / Structural Changes
The first step was confirming whether the existing walls could be removed safely. We brought in an engineer to verify that the walls were not load bearing. Once the engineer confirmed this, the project moved forward with full wall removal to open the space and allow for a new kitchen footprint.
With the room opened up, we designed a kitchen layout that improved circulation and solved the layout problems the homeowners were experiencing. The plan also allowed for a larger island than they originally imagined, which became a key feature of the updated kitchen.
Materials and Finishes
Our scope for this project focused on kitchen layout and design. The installation and final execution were completed by another team.
Key Elements
- Full wall removal to create a true great room
- A redesigned layout that improved flow and usability
A larger-than-expected island that anchored the space
Challenges
- Structural confirmation: We brought in an engineer to ensure the walls could be removed. Once confirmed as non-load bearing, the design could move forward with confidence.
- Kitchen layout limitations: The homeowners needed the new plan to resolve existing layout and circulation issues, which was addressed through a new kitchen configuration and island design.
