Mielke Residence Kitchen Remodel, Orange CA
Overview
The Mielke Residence in Orange, California included removing a wall and completely changing the layout of the kitchen and creating a significantly larger kitchen with more storage and better flow. We served as the interior designer, and managed the installation of the cabinetry to the kitchen design and interior finish selections. The client also requested a built in desk area to expand the overall feeling of an enlarged kitchen, as we connected the spaces with the same cabinetry color and style. Their island acted as seating, in place of the in-kitchen table set up they had. While the living room was separated into two spaces, which included a new dining room.
Project Goals
- Expand the kitchen by removing a wall to create more space for daily life
- Increase storage capacity and improve the kitchen layout for better family flow
- Create a classic, timeless kitchen design the homeowners could live with long term
- Stay within a tight budget while still selecting materials that offered quality and value
Design and Implementation
Layout / Structural Changes
This project began with the removal of a wall between the living room and the kitchen
We managed the design process, producing drawings and plans for their chosen General Contractor, as well as their architect and engineer.
Once the structure was complete, we moved inside and developed the kitchen remodel design, including interior planning and finish coordination.
Materials and Finishes
Material selections were guided by both design and longevity. The homeowners wanted kitchen cabinets that would last and fit their customized needs. We focused on semi-custom cabinetry that met their design expectation and would hold up well over time.
Challenges
- Design coordination: The project required clear communication between the homeowner and Anna Dwinger Interiors to provide them with the best layout for their remodel. 3D modeling was used to express the final look of the project.
- General Contractor communication: We had to express clearly the design through plans, elevations, and discussions over the phone and in person regarding the exact results expected.
Outcome
The Mielke Residence kitchen was successfully expanded and remodeled into a larger, more functional space designed for everyday family use. The classic design direction gave them a kitchen they can enjoy for years without it feeling dated, and the semi-custom cabinetry gave them the longevity they were looking for in wear and tear of daily use of the cabinets. By being involved from the inception of the design to the final installation, as their interior designer, we gave the homeowners the kitchen they wanted.
