Aguilar ADU

Overview

Aguilar ADU is a two-story, 800-square-foot structure added to an existing home in Laguna Niguel. Though formally recognized as an SB9 addition, it was often referred to as an ADU for simplicity. The new space connects with the main residence and carries the same Spanish colonial style, including matching roof tiles and a front door modeled after the original entry.

Project Goals

  • Extend the living area while preserving the Spanish colonial character of the primary home.
  • Establish a fluid connection between the existing house and the new addition.
  • Construct a fresh build from the ground up, complete with carefully chosen interior and exterior features.

Design and Implementation

  • Layout/Structural Changes:
The addition was built entirely from the ground level up. It integrates with the main house and aligns with its architectural details. This two-story build adheres to Spanish colonial elements on the exterior, including roof tiles that match the original structure.
  • Materials and Finishes:
Working alongside the homeowner, all finishes were selected at a showroom. This included flooring, cabinetry, tile, paint color, and other interior details. Every item was chosen to complement the existing design while introducing fresh accents.
  • Key Elements:
    • Exterior roof tiles and entry door styled to mirror the main house.
    • Consistent Spanish colonial design inside and out.
    • Bathroom and patio finishes that enhance the cohesive look of the addition.

Challenges

The project faced schedule setbacks. Early on, water leaking from the backyard pool complicated the foundation work and delayed progress by roughly a week. Scheduling conflicts among different trades also caused occasional pauses, as one delayed task would push the next step back.

Outcome

Despite running longer than the original three- to four-month timeline and concluding in about four and a half months, the addition successfully expanded the client’s living space and remained faithful to the Spanish colonial style. The client was more than happy with the final result, leading to discussions about further improvements on the main house.
